A new and fun way

of doing politics

Inspiration from a Nordic success story

Democracy festivals originated in the Nordic countries. They evolved from informal political gatherings to events that attract tens of thousands of visitors and have a central place on national political calendars. They combine serious discussions with fun and help shape the political agenda.

The People’s Meeting project is working to set up a similar event in Scotland.

“The Folkemodet lets voters engage directly with politicians – and politicians listen to voters. It is also great fun. I wish Scotland every success developing a similar event!”

Helle Thorning - Schmidt - Former Danish PM

Stephen Gethins - MP for Arbroath and Broughty Ferry

“Good policy relies on respectful informed discussion – a Bornholm style event could be great for our wider discourse in Scotland”

“To create a healthier political culture we wholeheartedly support bringing “Folkemodet” to Scotland. We will be there in 2027.”

Eddie Barnes - Director of the John Smith Centre

“If we want trust and convivial discussion to be how we hold our societies together then we need events  like this.”

Willie Sullivan - Senior Director, Campaigns and Scotland at Electoral Reform Society
